Alone in the Dark: the 1992 original behind Resident Evil

Shinji Mikami said that without Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil would probably have become a first-person shooter. It still sells on GOG and Steam.

Alone in the Dark came out for MS-DOS in 1992. Infogrames developed it in-house in France and published it in Europe, with I*Motion handling the United States. Guinness World Records lists it as the first 3D survival horror game. By January 2000 it had sold 2.5 million copies. Shinji Mikami said that without it Resident Evil would probably have become a first-person shooter.

Frédérick Raynal started with a box of matches

The director was Frédérick Raynal, an Infogrames programmer whose interest in horror films grew while he repaired computers in his father's VHS shop. Before this game he ported the Atari ST titles Continuum and The Cube to PC. He wrote the polygon engine with the help of Didier Chanfray, a 3D artist and programmer. The 2D artist on the team was Yaël Barroz, Raynal's wife.

The idea came from the top. Infogrames had bought the rights to Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu role-playing game, and CEO Bruno Bonnell suggested a game in which you strike matches to see a dark room. A proof of concept was presented in September 1991. Chanfray's chalk sketch of a figure in a dark, eerie hallway set the look.

The surviving working titles read like a shelf of B movies: In the Dark, Screams in the Dark, The Old Dark House, The Thing in the House and The Evil Fear. Writer Hubert Chardot outlined the plot in three afternoons and wrote most of the dialogue. Philippe Vachey composed the music for Ad Lib sound cards.

Chaosium did not like the result. The publisher of Call of Cthulhu revoked the license. One account says the game strayed too far from H. P. Lovecraft. Another says the design was too simple for the role-playing rules. Raynal said Dario Argento and George Romero influenced him more than Lovecraft did. Lovecraft supplied the atmosphere and some of the monsters. The hero's name, Edward Carnby, comes from a character in a Clark Ashton Smith story.

Raynal lost his credit and hated the game

Shortly before release, Bonnell asked Raynal to change the credit line to "Game created by Infogrames". Raynal later called the snub the trauma of his life. Infogrames then required a sequel on the same engine. Burned out, Raynal said in 2012, "In October 1992, I hated this game." He told Edge that "only the support of the press and the gamers allowed me to get over it." I think that 2012 quote is about the lost credit more than the workload. Raynal went on to direct the Little Big Adventure series with Barroz and Chanfray.

French magazine Tilt gave the game 19 out of 20 and called it a revolution. At the 1993 European Computer Trade Show it won Best Graphics and Most Original Game. The Consumer Electronics Show named it Best Foreign Game the same year. Sales were slower to build: 600,000 copies by February 1997, roughly four times that three years later.

Ports ran from 1993 to 2014, and two were canceled

I*Motion released it in the United States in 1993. A CD-ROM edition with spoken introductions came out the same year. Japan got PC-98 and FM Towns versions from Arrow Micro-Techs that year too.

MacPlay ported it to Mac OS in 1994, and Krisalis made the 3DO version that year and a RISC OS version in 1995. Atari Jaguar CD and 32X ports were in development, and neither shipped. An iOS version from Atari and Kung Fu Factory came out in 2014. The sequels arrived quickly: Jack in the Dark and Alone in the Dark 2 in 1993, then Alone in the Dark 3 in 1995.

Derceto mansion hides Mythos monsters and a pirate's spirit in a tree

You play Edward Carnby, a private investigator, or Emily Hartwood, the niece of the dead owner. Both enter Derceto, a 1920s Louisiana mansion where Jeremy Hartwood killed himself in 1925 to keep the occultist pirate Ezechiel Pregzt from using his body. The shelves hold the Necronomicon and De Vermis Mysteriis.

The enemies come from the Cthulhu Mythos, Deep Ones and Nightgaunts among them. Most can be fought bare-handed or with weapons found in the house. Some need a puzzle to get past, and a few cannot be killed at all and have to be avoided. The inventory is limited by weight, not by item count.

Solving the puzzle at the end of the third floor opens the first and second floors. The caverns underneath are linear, one puzzle after another. Critics praised the atmosphere and the cinematic angles but said the same fixed angles clashed with action scenes. IGN later gave it 6 out of 10.

Shinji Mikami moved Resident Evil to fixed cameras after seeing it

Resident Evil began as a fully 3D first-person game with shooting, loosely modeled on the Famicom horror game Sweet Home. The prototype did not get along with the original PlayStation's hardware. Mikami switched to a fixed camera after playing Alone in the Dark and adopted pre-rendered backdrops, which allowed far more detail per room.

He felt the fixed view made players more detached. Mikami still sees the switch as a compromise. Tank controls came along with it. In a 2014 interview with Le Monde he credited Raynal directly: without him, Resident Evil would probably have become a first-person shooter.

Where to play the original today

On GOG the 1992 game is sold in Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3, which also includes the bonus adventure Jack in the Dark. The extras include the manuals and the soundtracks for all three games. The bundle was $5.99 on October 23, 2026, and its lowest recorded price was $0.59 in March 2024, when the remake launched. The files are DRM-free and run through DOSBox on Windows and macOS.

On Steam the same game is listed as Alone in the Dark 1, with 92% of 378 reviews positive on October 23, 2026. It is sold inside the Alone in the Dark Anthology along with its two sequels and the 2008 reboot. The store page still lists Windows XP or Vista and 512 MB of RAM as the minimum.

If the camera lineage is what interests you, Resident Evil (1996) returned on Steam on April 1, 2026, published by Capcom.
