Heroes 3: Horn of the Abyss factions and the 1.8 update

Horn of the Abyss is a free fan expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic III, the 1999 strategy game that New World Computing made and The 3DO Company published. A volunteer group called the HotA Crew develops and publishes the mod. Its first version came out on December 31, 2011. It began with the Cove town. Factory came next, and Bulwark arrived in version 1.8.0 in January 2026.

The founder was a Russian developer and composer who went by Docent Picolan. In 2007 he gathered a team from Heroes III forums. They built it in their free time. By day, some of them were game developers and others worked in IT. The team set out to treat player experience more carefully than the older fan project In the Wake of Gods. The mod is unofficial and non-commercial.

The first release added the pirate-themed Cove. Factory followed by January 2024, and Bulwark came with version 1.8.0 on January 2, 2026, though the faction had been part of the project since its early days.

News that Picolan had died in a traffic accident came on November 7, 2020. Development continued without him. Paul Romero, who scored the original game, is the mod's other composer.

In 2022 Ubisoft's Eric Damian-Vernet asked the HotA team about putting mod content into an official board game expansion. The collaboration with Archon Studio was announced in April 2024. It produced a Cove expansion for the board game. The next one is Forge, a futuristic faction cut from the 1999 expansion Armageddon's Blade. Gregory Fulton, a former New World Computing designer, was consulted on it for the board game. Forge is also due in the mod.

Three towns, 54 heroes and five campaigns

Steam's page lists three new factions, 54 new playable heroes and five new campaigns. It also lists revamped secondary skills and better map and campaign editors, plus new artifacts and terrain.

Cove is the pirate-themed town, tied to the pirates of Regna. Factory is a western steampunk town with wooden saloons and smoking factories on a prairie. Its lineup has eight unit types. Halflings and engineers sit at the bottom, then guard automatons, bounty hunters and underground worms. Armored dragons and juggernauts sit at the top. Bulwark draws on Nordic, Celtic and Siberian cultures. Its people live on the ice-bound island of Vori: snow elves, frost giants, yetis and kobolds, with a faction skill called Runes.

Three of the campaigns tell a pirate story. In Under the Jolly Roger, Terror of the Seas and the title campaign, the pirate Jeremy Albatross and his brother Bidley Roberts chase the Horn of the Abyss. Bidley ends as Pirate King of Regna. Forged in Fire takes the halfling Henrietta and the Factory people to the city of Burton. All In picks up the mage Dargem between his appearances in Forged in Fire and Terror of the Seas.

Outside the towns, the mod adds simultaneous turns, a random map template editor, a campaign editor and support for giant maps. The online lobby is on Steam's list too, integrated through the HD Mod by Baratorch.

How to install Horn of the Abyss

HotA needs a copy of the original game. Install it over Heroes III: Shadow of Death or the Complete edition, in any language version. It should not go over the Ubisoft HD Edition, Restoration of Erathia or Armageddon's Blade. The current version is 1.8.1, dated August 25, 2026. The page offers mirrors and a torrent link. If you own the game on Steam or GOG, you can install HotA from that store instead. GOG has offered it as a one-click mod for Heroes 3: Complete since June 2025.

The mod runs on Windows. Mac, Linux and Android players are pointed to emulator guides. Steam's minimum requirements are Windows XP, a 500 MHz processor, 64 MB of RAM and 1,500 MB of storage.

On Steam the mod is listed as free to play, with HotA Crew as developer and publisher. When I checked on October 22, 2026, Steam showed 97 percent of 231 user reviews as positive. The same day, the original 1999 game with both expansions cost €9.99 on the European Steam store.

What changed in 2026

Besides Bulwark, the January report lists an expanded event system for the map editor and a fix that stopped the AI from pulling unlimited repeat artifacts out of Seer's Hut quests. Version 1.8.1 followed in August with balance and visual changes to Bulwark, five new single-player maps, two new random map templates and an improved tutorial for newcomers.

On August 25, 2026, the original Heroes 3 and its two expansions reached Steam, and Horn of the Abyss launched the same day.

The same week, Ubisoft announced a remake of Heroes 3 and its two expansions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. Steam lists it for 2027 and describes a rebuild in full 3D and 4K with nine factions and online play for up to eight players. The remake is a separate game from the mod.

The 2015 Ubisoft HD Edition left out the expansions and the random map generator and drew a 65 out of 100 on Metacritic for PC.

Yes. It is a free download on Steam, listed since August 25, 2026, and you need the Steam version of Heroes III in your library first. The older Steam HD Edition does not work with it, per the download page. GOG carries it too.
